I disected a sheep's heart today! It was very very fun, not to mention squishy and smelly! But seriously. Who cares? Disecting is so cool! You get to see everything in 3D form!
Before we started disecting, our Bio teacher started rambling on about the 'Ethics of Disection':
1) Respect the organ and treat it as if it were alive.
2) Do not mash the organ up into mince meat.
So after this briefing, we were given this lumpy red thing covered with white stuff on a tray and I stared at it thinking This is a HEART? It's so small!!!!! Actually, it was. Smaller than I expected really. When I got near it I began to have second thoughts about touching it. But then I really wanted to do it, so I tried sticking my pinky finger into the artery(which is the biggest blood vessel there) and it went all the way into the chamber of the heart!
My friend then tried cutting the sides to open it up so we could see the inside. Most people will think that the worst thing about cutting it is the blood and the smell right? In fact, the hardest part was actually CUTTING OPEN the tissue. It was so fatty and tough. But when we were done, we looked in at it was awesome. You can actually see everything clearly and I tried to pull the tendons of the valves out but they were REALLY TOO STRONG to pull out. So we gave up and cut it with scissors instead. I don't know if you take Bio, but the tendons in the heart are even thinner than thread! Amazing, don't you think?
And I really don't know why some people can't eat after disecting something. I was ravenous after it actually. So there you have it, I disected a heart today, learnt about it, and loved every minute of it.
